Pancakes with Lower Meadow School – Shrove Tuesday 8 March 2011

We laid on a hands-on pancake making demonstration at Whirlow Hall Farm on Shrove Tuesday.

Peter Moulam and Mat Webster were the cooks from PJ taste who set up their temporary kitchen in the farm’s Crook Barn.  PJ taste is a member of the charity’s 480 scheme established to support local schools within disadvantaged areas of the city.

The visit gave 30 pupils from Lower Meadow School, Batemoor Road, Sheffield the opportunity to be immersed in the farm for a day taking in a farm tour, collecting fresh eggs and learning where our food comes from. Then it was off to the pancake demonstration which involved an opportunity for the children to take control of the pan and master the art of pancake tossing.

Peter Moulam said “as a business our mission is to use local food to create delicious food experiences.  Having the opportunity to cook with a group of receptive young people was brilliant.  We all enjoyed making pancakes with apples and chocolate sauce showing how easy it is to prepare fresh food.  The big bonus was having ingredients as fresh as the eggs from the farm which had travelled no more than 50 metres from hen to pan!”

Sarah Kerrigan, Fundraiser and Events Organiser, from Whirlow Hall Farm Trust said “The children have had a great time at the farm with Peter and Mat having made the day extra special with the excitement of the pancake workshop. At Whirlow Hall Farm all our work is designed to engage young people in learning whilst building confidence and social development. The children think they are having a brilliant time away from school and often don’t even realise they are learning! One little girl said “It was better than my birthday and Christmas put together”
